Internships
Intergenerational Programming and Advocacy
Light Heart provides a unique and dynamic opportunity for university
and college students to meet internship requirements and to
gain professional experience in a field that is rapidly growing
and gaining international recognition.
Intergenerational concepts and strategies are now being studied
in a variety of fields and there is significant research now
demonstrating the social, economic and health benefits of Intergenerational
Strategies.
Disciplines Incorporating Intergenerational Ideas:
- Community Planning
- Policy & Economic Development
- Sociology
- Human Services
- Health Care
- Advertising and Business
- Education
- Architecture
Some reasons for this interest are:
- Dramatic demographic changes occurring in many countries
- Increased age isolation due to mobility away from towns
of origin
- Necessity for creative funding approaches that combine resources
of different special interest groups such as senior and youth
services
Internship Position Description
We are currently working with Northern Arizona University’s
Gateway Student Success Center and Yavapai Community College,
Clarkdale Campus Career Services.
Our internships begin with orientation and training in intergenerational
concepts, strategies and programming. Either semester or year
long internship positions are available in the Verde Valley,
Arizona area. Under staff supervision, the interns will be assisting
the coordination of Project H.U.G. ©, Helping Unite Generations,
which is an ongoing service learning program that brings students
from elementary and middle school together with seniors in retirement,
convalescent, assisted living and skilled nursing facilities.
The ideal candidate has excellent people and communication
skills and is very comfortable working with both youth and seniors
in a highly interactive manner within classroom and facility
settings.
An existing curriculum is used, however, we are looking for
creative input and feedback from the interns to enhance the
program. There may be an opportunity to expand to the teen age
group. Time commitment will be 5 to 10 hours per week and can
be somewhat flexible. Positions require time spent both in the
Cottonwood offices and out in the field and may include travel
to Sedona, Cottonwood and Camp Verde.
Scholarships
Scholarships for these internship positions are being developed
for Yavapai College and NAU. Scholarships will cover the cost
of the required units for the internship and travel reimbursement.
